Pug Rescue of Sacramento is a non-profit organization that takes in pugs and pug mixes from across Northern California that have been abandoned at pounds or shelters, found as strays or turned in by their owners. We then spay or neuter the dogs, make sure they are current on their shots, provide for other medical assessment and treatment as needed, and then place them in loving, pre-screened adoptive homes.

Marianne Herzberg-Stanley had been doing informal pug rescue for years, but in the early 1990's she jumped in with both feet. Without the assistance of financial backing, she began to spread the word that she would rescue any and all pugs and pug mixes in need in the Sacramento, CA area and find them good and loving homes. The first few years were extremely difficult, especially financially. Marianne was doing all of the fostering, taking the dogs to the vet to be spayed or neutered, and taking care of other medical problems or evaluations that needed to be done. Since she was financing this all by herself, she would ask the vets if they would hold her check until the dog was adopted, and some vets even gave her open accounts for the rescues. For several years she single-handedly rescued and adopted out dozens of dogs.

In 1996, several other pug lovers and owners asked Marianne if they could join her and assist in her rescue efforts, and P.R.O.S. was born. In November of 1996 the first P.R.O.S. fundraiser, a pug party, raffle, and auction, was held, and was attended by almost 50 pugs and their people. This is now a yearly Fall event.

P.R.O.S. has rescued pugs all over Northern California with the expanded commitment of volunteers in various geographical areas. We are always looking for additional volunteers as well as foster homes for the pugs waiting to find new families.

P.R.O.S. accepts donations of new goods and services for our yearly auction and raffle, as well as cash donations. We are a non-profit corporation so your donation may be tax deductible. These funds go to providing food and medical treatment and care for the growing number of rescues which are finding their way to our door.

All dogs that are adopted out are done so under a contract that provides that the dog will be returned to P.R.O.S. if the owner can no longer keep the dog for any reason. It is the goal of P.R.O.S. to never turn away a pug in need. P.R.O.S. does not euthanize any animal because of lack of space or inability to find a home, and in fact will only do so in cases of extreme medical need.
